How to Choose a 4 Man Dome Tent

Posted on: October 25, 2011

Does the design of a 4 man dome tent really matter? Absolutely. The more elaborate the tent, the more difficult it will be to pitch it, and break it down. There are two distinguishably different kinds of tents. There's the tent intended to be carried on hiking trips, like on a bike or backpack. And then there's the larger tent, intended to be transported in a car or truck.

Pop up tents are by far the easiest to pitch. Most people use these types of tents in the summer, and for children. You basically unpack the tent, and it "pops" open, already assembled and ready to be used. Extremely convenient and lightweight, these tents sell easily.

Tunnel tents are also popular. These work great for families who want separate sleeping quarters, yet still remain together. Basically, the tent has little tunnels which attach the different sleeping areas together. These tents are still easy to set up, and offer a variety of configurations. These tents perform well in windy situations.

The 4 man dome tent is made from flexible frame pieces, and are available to accommodate 1 person up to 10 persons, with a ceiling as high as six feet. Imagine two of the letter "D's" standing parallel on the straight edge, and leaning in at the top, to be attached by the curve. This is how the frame of a dome tent is set up. These tents are usually double layered, and are very popular.

A pup tent, is a very small tent. It is made by pitching two vertical poles apart from each other, attaching a rope at the top of those poles, and then covering the rope with fabric. Guy rope is then attached to the bottom edges of the fabric, and pulled outward to form a resting area inside.

The Geodesic tent is similar to the dome tent. They often have more flexible frame pieces, to support the layers of fabric that cover the tent. Most people buy these types of tents when camping in extremely cold conditions; however, you may want to consider investing in a tent trailer, if the weather will be extremely windy.

Outside of the fact that you "want" one, there are a few reasons to invest in a 4 man tent. For starters, they're economical, portable, and environmentally friendly. If you're a nature lover, these reasons alone should be enough to sell you. Tents are also a necessity if you plan on spending a lot of time in the wilderness or open country side. You'll rest easier, knowing that your camera and navigational equipment will be safe inside the tent, in case of inclement weather.
